How Does Ultrasound Extract Fish Oil?
Mar 30, 2026
Ultrasonic extraction relies on the "cavitation effect" of ultrasound. It doesn't involve complex chemical reactions, relying entirely on physical extraction, which is easy to understand. Ultrasound waves, inaudible to the naked eye, have frequencies far beyond human perception. When introduced into a mixture of fish oil extract solvent and raw fish, countless tiny bubbles are generated within the liquid.
These tiny bubbles, under the high-frequency vibration of the ultrasound, rapidly expand and then burst instantly. This process releases a weak but extremely strong localized impact force, like countless tiny "explosives," gently shattering the cell walls and membranes of the fish raw material. The fish oil, originally tightly locked inside the cells, is quickly released into the surrounding extraction solvent after the cell structure is disrupted. This allows for efficient separation of the fish oil without the need for high-temperature, prolonged cooking.
A simplified process for ultrasonic extraction of fish oil:
1. Raw Material Pretreatment: First, clean the fish fat, fish by-products, etc., to remove impurities and blood. Then, pulverize the raw materials to reduce particle size, facilitating subsequent ultrasonic extraction and improving extraction efficiency.
2. Solvent Mixing: Place the pulverized raw materials into the extraction equipment, add food-grade, harmless extraction solvent, and mix thoroughly to ensure complete contact between the raw materials and solvent.
3. Ultrasonic Extraction: Turn on the ultrasonic equipment, set the appropriate frequency and time, and the equipment emits ultrasonic waves. Through cavitation, the cells are broken down, and the fish oil is rapidly extracted. This process is very short, usually completed in tens of minutes, much faster than traditional methods.
Separation and Purification: After extraction, separate the raw material residue and the solvent containing fish oil through filtration, centrifugation, etc. Then, remove the solvent, dehydrate, and refine to obtain pure, impurity-free, and nutritionally complete fish oil.
Key Advantages of Ultrasonic Fish Oil Extraction:
- Gentle and Nutrient-Protecting: The entire process requires no high temperatures, utilizing low-temperature physical extraction to maximize the retention of active nutrients like DHA and EPA in the fish oil. This prevents oxidation and nutrient loss, resulting in higher quality fish oil with a milder fishy smell.
- High Efficiency and Short Processing Time: Traditional extraction methods may take several hours, while ultrasonic extraction can be completed in tens of minutes. Cell disruption is more thorough, leading to a higher fish oil yield and reduced raw material waste.
- Green and Safer: Only a small amount of harmless solvent is needed. The extraction process leaves no chemical residues and generates no pollutants, meeting food and health product safety standards. The purified fish oil has high purity.
- Simple and Controllable Operation: The entire process can be precisely controlled through equipment parameters, making it suitable for mass production. It can be easily adapted to both small-scale laboratory trials and large-scale industrial production.
