The Advantages Of Ultrasonic Emulsification Technology in The Production Of Emulsified Fuel

Jul 03, 2021

Emulsion fuel is an emulsion composed of water and a flammable liquid (oil or fuel). The most commonly used emulsion fuel in industrial production is a water emulsion made by emulsification of diesel and water. Diesel and water emulsion fuels provide more complete combustion and more economical fuel consumption, while producing less waste from burning the fuel.

Emulsification equipment

Since the use of emulsified fuel can reduce the amount of fuel used, it also directly reduces production costs. It also reduces greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and sulfur oxides (SOx), thus attracting attention as a highly environmentally friendly new fuel.

environmental impact

Combustion of traditional fuels (diesel, gasoline, etc.) emits large amounts of harmful gases such as nitrous oxide (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), as well as particulate matter (PM) and black smoke. Due to the widespread use of this equipment, the impact on the environment is enormous.

Human health impact

The combustion of traditional fuels releases toxic and harmful substances, such as sulfur dioxide, ozone, sulfate, and toxic substances such as formaldehyde and benzene. The particle diameter of these substances is small, which is easy to be inhaled by the human body and has an impact on human health.

Advantages of ultrasonic emulsification equipment

Ultrasonic emulsification is a simple and effective technique that can be used to produce stable fuel emulsions with nanoscale droplets (nanoemulsions). The driving force of phacoemulsification is acoustic cavitation, which produces violent and asymmetric bursting vacuum bubbles during operation, resulting in microjets and strong shear forces that break up droplets into nanometer sizes. Ultrasonic emulsification equipment can obtain an emulsion of base fuel (eg diesel or kerosene) and water. These emulsions can greatly reduce these harmful emissions during use.

Environmental benefits

In terms of environmental benefits, fuel emulsions are one of the alternatives to basic fuels such as petroleum. It can be used in unmodified diesel engines and can reduce nitrous oxide gas emissions by approximately 35% because the water in the fuel emulsion lowers the temperature of the local flame. In addition, since the sonicated fuel burns more thoroughly, the particulate matter produced by the combustion process can be reduced by approximately 60%. The use of emulsified fuels also reduces the possibility of environmental pollution.

Economic benefits

There are also immediate economic benefits to using sonication fuels. Water in emulsified fuel improves fuel atomization and combustion efficiency, thereby reducing fuel consumption. Since water boils at a much lower temperature than fuel, it evaporates easily when heated. At a "superheat limit temperature" of about 270°C, a micro-explosion of fine water droplets occurs throughout the emulsified fuel. This also allows for better mixing of the fuel and air in the engine. In addition, water can also replace part of the fuel, and the loss of energy is mostly compensated by the increase in the combustion efficiency of the remaining fuel.

Achieve stability

The stability of the emulsified fuel prepared by ultrasonic emulsification is high, so no additional surfactant is needed to stabilize the emulsion. The strong shear force of ultrasonic equipment is effective for producing stable nanoemulsions. Although the purchase of ultrasonic equipment results in additional production costs, these costs are often offset by the benefits of reducing the amount of surfactant required in the emulsification process.
