A Novel And Efficient Extraction Pathway For Ginsenosides And Polysaccharides Using Ultrasonic Extraction.
Mar 14, 2026
Ginseng's medicinal and nutritional value has long been confirmed by millennia of traditional Chinese medicine practice and modern scientific research. Ginsenosides and ginseng polysaccharides are the core active ingredients in ginseng, making them popular components in the food and cosmetics industries. How to efficiently and gently extract these two active ingredients, maximizing their bioactivity while reducing production costs and improving efficiency, has always been a core issue in the ginseng deep processing industry. The emergence of ultrasonic extraction technology has completely broken the limitations of traditional extraction processes. With its unique technological advantages, it has become the mainstream technology in modern ginseng deep processing, providing a new solution for the large-scale, high-quality extraction of ginsenosides and polysaccharides.

Compared to traditional extraction processes, the core advantage of ultrasonic extraction technology fundamentally changes the efficiency and effectiveness of the extraction process, highlighting its essential difference from traditional methods and becoming the key to its success. The core principle of ultrasonic extraction technology is to utilize the "cavitation effect" generated by ultrasound (usually 20–100 kHz) in the extraction solvent, accompanied by mechanical vibration and thermal effects, to achieve efficient disruption of ginseng cell walls and rapid dissolution of active ingredients. Specifically, when ultrasound propagates in a liquid medium, it generates countless tiny bubbles. These bubbles expand rapidly and burst instantaneously under the influence of the ultrasonic field.
The bursting instant generates localized high temperatures (up to thousands of degrees Celsius) and high pressures (up to hundreds of atmospheres), forming powerful microjets and shear forces. This force can directly break down the cellulose structure of ginseng cell walls, creating tiny pores in the cell walls and membranes, or even completely rupturing them. This allows the active ingredients such as ginsenosides and polysaccharides within the cells to be released rapidly and fully into the extraction solvent, improving extraction efficiency from the source.
Besides the core cavitation effect, the uniqueness of ultrasonic extraction technology also lies in its "mild, efficient, precise, and controllable" characteristics. It can be performed at room temperature or low temperatures (40–60℃) without prolonged high-temperature heating, maximizing the preservation of the bioactivity of ginsenosides and polysaccharides and ensuring the quality and efficacy of the extracted product. Meanwhile, parameters such as ultrasonic frequency, power, extraction time, and material-to-liquid ratio can be precisely controlled. Extraction conditions can be optimized based on the type of ginseng raw material (fresh ginseng, dried ginseng, ginseng stems and leaves, etc.), particle size, and the purity requirements of the target product (saponins or polysaccharides), achieving "on-demand extraction"-a level of precision difficult to achieve with traditional extraction processes. Furthermore, ultrasonic extraction technology uses only 50%–70% of the solvent compared to traditional processes, with a solvent recovery rate exceeding 90%. This not only reduces production costs but also minimizes environmental pollution from solvent emissions, aligning with the development concept of modern green production.
From the perspective of specific extraction results, the advantages of ultrasonic extraction technology are particularly prominent. Experimental data shows that using ultrasonic extraction technology to extract ginsenosides can achieve an extraction rate of over 8%, far exceeding the 5.01% of the traditional water extraction and alcohol precipitation method, and 30%–65% higher than Soxhlet extraction. The extraction time is only 20–60 minutes, compared to several hours in traditional processes, shortening the time by 50%–85%, significantly improving production efficiency. In ginseng polysaccharide extraction, ultrasonic extraction technology also demonstrates excellent performance. With an ultrasonic power of 200W, an ultrasonic time of 30 minutes, and a material-to-liquid ratio of 1:50, the polysaccharide extraction rate reaches a high level, and the extracted polysaccharides exhibit higher purity with significantly lower impurity content compared to traditional processes, greatly reducing the difficulty of subsequent purification. This unique advantage of being "highly efficient, of high quality, energy-saving, and environmentally friendly" has led to the rapid replacement of traditional processes by ultrasonic extraction technology, which is now widely used in various fields of modern ginseng deep processing.
In modern production, the application of ultrasonic ginsenoside and polysaccharide extraction technology has covered multiple fields such as pharmaceuticals, health products, food, and cosmetics, forming a large-scale, standardized production system and becoming a core driving force for the high-quality development of the ginseng industry.
